Seventh-round pick DE Nick Reed will try to continue his preseason success story tonight from the first minute the Seahawks' defense hits the field. The coaching staff has given him a chance to start in tonight's game at Kansas City.

Look for Reed's infamous motor to be tested against the Chiefs. While they aren't known for having a particularly impressive offensive line, the experience will ultimately give the Seahawks' coaching staff a chance to see how Reed fares in a "real game" situation. He's been a huge surprise so far, and has the potential to be a steal so late in the draft.

Other players on the Seahawks' defense to watch tonight: (I know we've been over this before, but bear with me)

  • DT Michael Bennett, who has had a solid preseason so far alongside teammates Brandon Mebane and Colin Cole. Depth at DT is looking good so far, and Bennett might be a quality role player in this system.
  • LB Aaron Curry will look to make his first statement as a Seahawk. Maybe we'll see those ferocious pass-rushing skills that had coaches touting his name during camp. This is the perfect opportunity for Curry to buckle down and show up.
  • LB Will Herring has played very well so far and will try to prove tonight that he's worth keeping on an already-deep linebacker corps. Herring has been more of a special teams guy until now, but the cards are in his favor for a possible role in the defense if his quality play keeps up.
  • DE Lawrence Jackson needs every look he can get at this point. Defensive end has suddenly become pretty deep on this team as well, especially with Cory Redding's versatility. Jackson needs to show he's worth the first-round selection he was taken at last year, or in a worst-case scenario for himself, prove he's worth trade bait (though I'm not believing those rumors quite yet.)
  • S Brian Russell / Jordan Babineaux have been in a quiet battle for the starting job at free safety for quite a while. Look for that battle to come to a close after tonight.
With that, it's almost time for kickoff. Go Hawks!
