...at least, until he does something more significant than signing his name. Today was Edge day at the VMAC, as Mr. James himself showed up to practice, adorned in a #32 white jersey (Kevin Hobbs moved to #38). What he did at practice (sat on the sidelines talking to Julius Jones and RB Coach Kasey Dunn) was less significant than the mini press conference he and Mora held afterwards. Here's a summary culled from Sando, Williams, and Farnsworth.

  • The most important thing that came out of both Mora and James' remarks was that Edgerrin James was signed to be a complementary back. He will not be competing for a starting job, he was not brought in to do so, and he does not expect to do so. In fact, reading a transcript of the presser from Eric Williams was annoying; how many times can you say "complementary" before we get the point, guys?
  • Edgerrin James will probably be the first person to be coached by both Jim Mora 1 and Jim Mora 2. JLM's pop coached James in Indianapolis, and told Coach Mora that he was one of his personal favorite players he'd ever coached.
  • Why is James back? Well, it ain't for the money. James: "It’s not where I’m forced to play. I’ve done a lot in his league and I’m not somebody who’s just coming out here just to pick up a paycheck. I want to play, and that’s the best part about it."
  • James also refused to take any shots at the Cardinals, saying he was pleased with his experience there but it was time for them both to move on.
