TJ Houshmandzadeh took an unorthodox route to the NFL: he dropped out Barstow High School, attended Cerritos Junior College, and was lucky enough to wow some scouts at Oregon State and make the squad. He was drafted in the late rounds of the NFL Draft and wasn't expected to make the team. Well, he made it.
But most won't.
That was the essence of his message to a group of UW defensive backs that he ran into during the recent Husky Stadium practice, and Housh took about 20 minutes to talk to the guys and let them know that they need to make the most out of their opportunity at the UW. Don't just play well, but embrace the studies and get your degree. Here's Houshyourguidancecounselorzadah on the little conversation he had:
“I was just trying to give them the type of advice I wish I had gotten. I told them that not everybody is going to make the NFL, that’s just not going to happen, but to take advantage of the opportunity that they have to go to school for free. That’s it, because at the end of the day, if you don’t make it at least you want to have something you can fall back on to have a good life for your family.”
So, while a lot of people may have jumped on Housh (here's looking at you, Florio), accusing him of being another primadonna WR, this story should help allay those concerns a bit.
