Matt Hasselbeck spoke with Mitch Levy yesterday and had quite a bit of worthwhile insight to share. The thing that stood out to me the most though was his brief discussion with Mitch regarding the offensive line. We saw Locklear give up two sacks, and Hass was hit a third time too. Hasselbeck was saying that in at least one case (and I think he said two), the sack was not caused by the pass protection but by his inability to get the ball out in a timely manner.
Hasselbeck looked fantastic statistically this weekend, and he did play very well, but he also held the ball too long a number of times, which he credited to him expecting a WR to do X when they actually did Y. Whether that ultimately falls on Hasselbeck or his WRs is unknown, but 'Beck did mention that he has reverted to the previous offense when he was forced to adjust or make quick decisions. That makes sense, but it's not exactly a good thing as his WRs will not be on the same page. I expect this to work itself out over time, but in the third preseason game it will be incumbent upon Hasselbeck to make quicker decisions even if that means going to his dumpoff guy (which, judging by Forsett's 9 receptions, was happening quite a bit already).
Still, this does not make me feel much better about the offensive line. While I think the personnel we have will be good enough, they don't yet appear great. The individual players don't need to be great -- look at the Giants or the Broncos who consistently have among the best lines in football -- but they need to be a cohesive team with at least one cornerstone leader.

It would be great if the O-Line, and the entire offense for that matter, could start playing at a high level the second half of the season when the schedule gets tough.
If the defense doesn't improve dramatically over last year, then it's going to be a long '09. In that case we would have two high first round draft picks in '10.

Wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to trade Nate for O-Line help. Throw to Housh, Branch, Taylor and Carlson at TE, keep Butler, Obamanu and Kent as WR reserves, Newton and Owens at backup TE. PS Hass and Bumpus and Morrah, waive Payne.
Same story on DEs; trade Jackson or Atkins, keep the rest between the roster and PS.
This team needs OLine help in a big hurry or the season will be over in October when Matt goes down after one too many sacks.

Glad to see that someone else is thinking this way...
Moto, that's my take too...Edge gives Hass that extra half second to figure out what he's doing, and a viable dump off option if he can't...As far as other Oline help, look for it to come in Feb, then again in April...not a hell of a lot we can do about it right now...

I really liked the 4th down conversion play to Courtney Taylor last weekend. That's a huge confidence play. let's see if he can be a go-to guy this week. if so, he's a keeper. he seems to matured from last year. He's also solid on special teams on punt coverage. I like Obomanu as well, but he's smaller.
No reason to get rid of Burleson unless someone is willing to overpay for him. I'd rather see the Superbowl MVP leave. He does nothing for me. At least Nate, at his worst, is an exeptional punt return man.

If anything we should trade some of our younger WR's and some later draft picks for a decent guard. Levi Jones would probably be a better bet than any current tackle we can trade for, teams just don't part with quality tackles.

I doubt anyone is going to give much value for an oft-injured and small receiver so Branch will stay. There might be some interest in Nate, though and I would think the 'Hawks would be better off with a solid OLine guy than a WR whose contract expires after the season.

A little bit worried is fine, but many folks are acting as if our entire O line were composed of quadriplegic kindergartners... There's absoloutly no question that the O line will not be one of our strengths this year, but that didn't seem to stop the Steelers last year, did it? Even with the O line as it is, I think we have the talent to win the west...the question is, can we put it together? Only time (and NOT pre season games) will tell...

I am glad to see Justin Forsett lighting it up in yet another preseason. This time he's gotten a shot with the first team and has shown that he can hang with the big boys. I hope he's given some opportunities during the regular season.
