A "league source" informs the PFT guys that TJ Duckett has been released and was informed of the decision on Monday night.

This ends my speculation re: Julius Jones trade, but probably speaks strongly that Jones is healthy, as they could have easily cut a scrub to make a roster spot for Edge.

Duckett was a touchdown machine last year, but that was mainly because that was the role he was put in, and because we had few reliable passing options. He wasn't going to be needed so much in that role this year, so this is a cut that makes a lot of sense.

Still, this offensive line is hopefully not settled, because it does not look very good. We should find out by Thursday whether Vallos or Unger will be the starting Center moving forward. If it is Vallos, I would expect Unger to win out at guard. If not, which is how I'm leaning, it will be Locklear - Sims - Unger - Wrotto - Willis. On a scale of 1-10, that line is a 4. Getting Jones back and sliding Lock to RG gets us to a 6 or 7.

UPDATE: From Softy Mahler's Facebook page:

TJ Duckett is on his way out..I just talked to him and he's pretty bummed out. Said he hasnt heard directly from the Hawks yet but u could hear in his voice he knows he's on his way out.

Anyone know the cap implications of this move?

Levi Jones please?!..or will we wait till first wave of cuts and take delivery of other team's throw ways? What ever the case, fix the OL so these guys can have some holes to run through...

I don't think the OL was the only problem early on versus Denver. I thought that Duckett looked extremely slow and not just slow to hit the hole, he really just looked like he was moving in slow motion.

I do think TJ lost a step over the last couple years and he does not hit the hole hard like he used to. It looked like in the Denver game he was thinking about where to go to much and there were not a lot of options.

I am not sold the Edge is the answer but if Knapp & Mora dont want TJ they must know something. Everyone thought TJ was brought in last year for Mora to use this year.

The O-line is a mess. I don't see Ruskel doing any dumb deals and there are not many offensive linemen out there that are any good that teams are willing to trade. I did see Miami sent 2 guys with starting experience to KC but our whole line has starting experience so that doesnt necessarily say much.
OL Help

The Hawks have to improve the OL somehow or this will be another lost year. At this rate Matt won't even make it to the bye week.

I wasn't particularly impressed with Duckett in the last game, but this feels like a really bad move. Edgerrin James will be no better. Did anyone see how he played in AZ behind a porous OL? Yeah me too. He looked D-O-N-E last I checked. I certainly hope this means we'll be bringing in some O-Line help.

I really hope the front office knows what they're doing, but the run game and O-Line are looking SERIOUSLY weak. This move suggests we won't even be able to move the ball in short yardage. Could make for a long, long, long season.

This move tells me the Seahawks are in win-now mode. I'm not sure that James is the answer but I like the idea that the front office is willing to make a move.

I think this move confirms the selection of a RB with one of our top three picks next draft

cap implications: duckett counts roughly the same against the cap whether he is on the roster or not, so no cap savings by cutting him.

edge was taken out of the line-up part way through last season, and then reinserted for the playoffs and played quite well. he still was running good well after our season was over, so it would stand to reason that he can still play today. the question is how long he can play at a high level, and how much he can contribute to the seahawks this season.

edge signed a one-year deal, so this would probably be his last hurrah with seattle either way. getting a new rb next year would probably make sense.

So far everyone on the networks is saying that releasing Duckett and adding James makes sense and is a great move. I really liked Duckett and I will be sad to see him go but we have to get this running game going. You can't win off of screen passes.

I am reading all of these statments saying that we need to improve our OL. Matt Hasselbeck himself said that two of the sacks were his fault because he held the ball too long. I think we are going to be fine but it would be wise to add one more OLmen just in case of further injury.

The o-line just needs to play together, gel. Everyday someone in and someone out. Pick it and stick with it and by week three with a soft early schedule we should be clicking.

Good morning
I just want to apologize for getting into it with a troll last night. It brings down the whole community when you feed into it. That said, I love this move. We are headed in the right direction.
James for Duckett
written by frontstreetfan, August 25, 2009
This has to be a positive swap. As others have said no real cap implications. James is a solid experienced Pro who can only help and he's got to love the opportunity to play against the Cards and Colts. His Pass protect skills are top notch and who would consider TJ to be a better runner than Edge. He looked fresh and solid in the playoffs last yr.
I agree with Matt he held the ball too long on several snaps. He is still getting accustomed to the timing of the new offense. Relax everyone we will be fine on the OL. We've got talent and coaching it will come together.

Like the move.

Don't like that we paid TJ a $2.5 million bonus this offseason.

Monopoly Money

An offensive line gets short yardage first downs more than a back does. Julius and Edge can get the short gains just as well as TJ. Too bad to burn that bonus to Duckett, but that's NFL life.

I watched the first half of the game again last night, and this time around the defense didn't look that bad, and the offensive line didn't look that bad either. Duckett did look indecisive running and chose the wrong holes a couple of times. He just doesn't have the speed/vision to get outside when that is what is blocked.

Protection for Hass wasn't great, but I've seen a lot worse. The key for this year's Hawks will be passing game, and as long as Hass stays healthy, which I think he is likely to do, we'll be competitive. Housh looks awesome. So much confidence just oozing from him. He doesn't take crap from anyone. Between Housh and Carlson, the middle of the field will be tough to defend. Speed guys outside will have opportunities one-on-one.

Deion Branch looks really really small and hard to find. If I'm Hasselbeck I'd rather throw to other guys who seperate and are more findable.

Edge obviously is not the same runner he once was, but he is a solid pickup for the team. One of the more important aspects is putting him in the game does not sell us out to run. Prior to losing the third down role in Arizona he was great at catching the ball out of the backfield. Now hes not as crafty as before so don't expect huge gains off a play like that, but it sure does add a wrinkle the team just didn't have with Duckett in the game. Even with his age he probably has a step to the hole on TJ also. Having Edge on board is also a great thing for Forsett.

As for TJ, I honestly am a little sad to see him go. He was a good teammate by all accounts and while he wasn't a big gainer nor is a feature back he certainly played his specific role well last year. I hope he can find another team.

Chris, I heard on the radio the Hawks were starting Vallos at center with Wrotto and Unger battling it out for the guard spot. Not sure what truth there is to it tho.

Okay, this is probably a terrible idea... but I had a theory. I will admit, I really, really wanted Seattle to add Warrick Dunn. I am not dissapointed that we got Edgerrin James though and I think he is definitely an upgrade. Here is my idea... maybe we could still use Julius Jones as trade bait. Now we have Edgerrin James who in my opinion is more talented than Julius Jones. We send Julius Jones and maybe one (or two) of our recievers or a DE for some OL help. Then, we sign Warrick Dunn. James would be our #1 back, and then Forsett and Dunn could be our #2 and #3. Julius Jones may be better than Warrick Dunn, but he certainly hasn't proven that yet. We could get our OL help and probably even save some money too.
J-Force... gotta feel good this morning.

This has to seriously boost Justin Forsett's confidence don't you think? I mean here he is wondering whether he's even going to make the team and then the Hawks release Duckett in order to keep him on the roster. Hopefully he takes this and runs with it.

Duckett's one-dimensionalism caught up with him. Granted that one dimension was very strong (short-yardage pounder), but like someone above said Duckett on the field allows opposing defenses to completely sell out to an run up the middle. Edge adds a lot of versatility to the offense in the form of a back that the Hawks can confidently count on to pass block, catch the ball consistently, and generally execute all of the technical aspects of the RB position. If Jones was injured and the Hawks had to rest their fate on the shoulders of Duckett and Forsett, they would have seriously limited the flexibility of the run game. This is a nice move by Timmy. Can't wait to see Edge play the Cardinals and Colts.

I'm loving this speculation here about Forsett/Edge etc. One other thing I was wondering is maybe this means a few more carries for tanks like Schmitt or Griffith? Maybe those guys also played a role in the Duckett decision. Short yardage gains, Duckett's specialty, won't be so one-dimensional now this year with more passing options and more RB depth.

I don't agree with all of John's stuff over at Field Gulls, but he has a great writeup on James. After his initial emotional post about losing Duckett, he went and took a look at what James did late last season, and spotlighted 5 plays against us that showed what he is still best at in running...

... no 3rd gear, but hits guys and pushes them back and gets extra yardage, and a QUICK first step and really fast to the hole. In other words, what we need.

The pass blocking skills of Edge are a huge upgrade over Duckett, this will give Matt that extra half second he needs to make his decision, plus it will give him a reliable outlet should no one be open downfield...so, in a way, this helps the Oline...
plus, there is no part of Edge's game that's not an improvement over Duckett's game...is it a stopgap? You bet it is, but the draft is a ways away...and now I'm seeing the draft go S. LT, RB...(unless Berry's gone, then LT, RB, maybe OG?
